Basic Information
DEVELOPMENT OF THE GERMAN FURNITURE INDUSTRY

Among the various segments of the German furniture industry in 2005, the largest segment were cupboards and cabinets, which contributed an annual turnover of €5.9 billion. The turnover of seating furniture totalled €4.6 billion. Third on the list is kitchen furniture. Turnover in this segment came up to €3.5 billion. High demand from abroad led to particularly positive developments in Germany’s office furniture segment, the fourth-largest in the industry, which posted an annual turnover of €2.3 billion in 2005. Finally, the segment of mattresses generated turnover of €920 million.

EXPORTS AND IMPORTS

Thanks to increasing success abroad, the export quota of the German furniture industry rose to 32 per cent in 2005. This represents a 100 per cent increase compared to 1996 (approx. 15 per cent). The sector’s overall export volume amounted to €5.6 billion, up 5.9 per cent compared to 2004. As a result, the foreign trade deficit fell considerably in 2005. Since imports increased by only 1.3 per cent to €6.8 billion, the import surplus dropped by 15.2 per cent to €1.2 billion compared to the previous year. The main destination for exports of German furniture is still western Europe. Of all the furniture exported from Germany in 2005, 64 per cent went to the member states of the former EU15.

CONTRACT BUSINESS

The contract business is steadily gaining in importance for the exporters of German furniture. That is why the trade fair “imm cologne” is more appealing than ever to architects, builders and foreign buyers, thanks to the renewed growth of the increasingly professional section addressing the contract business. The exhibited products and ideas for e.g. hotels, restaurants and airport interiors offer real added value for the trade visitors. The German furniture industry already reportes an annual turnover of around €650 million in this important, expanding sector in the domestic market alone.
